Six strategies for success in the next era of mobility

The market for mobility will change. Strategies need to be adapted.

Electromobility and autonomous driving are coming. I remember well that even in leading automotive companies, this statement was fundamentally questioned just a few years ago. There is now agreement on this, and the only disagreement among leadership teams is about the speed of change and the urgency of action.

While you still hear politicians talking about a bright future for the diesel engine, the leaders of successful automotive companies, suppliers and mobility service providers are already gearing their businesses up for the next era.

But how can alignment with the new era look when much of today’s business is threatened? In which direction can suppliers develop at all? Every company has a different starting position and thus its very own future opportunities. However, in the more than ten years that I have now been accompanying mobility companies on their journey into the future, I have encountered some recurring archetypes for strategic alignment. You will now find these summarized in a white paper. In addition to our own experience and that of our clients, we have evaluated around 50 studies on future trends, market scenarios and strategies for automotive manufacturers and suppliers.

As a result, the basic strategies provide orientation on possible development directions:

  1. Last man standing
  2. Transfer competencies outside automotive
  3. Pivot to solutions for new mobility
  4. Leapfrog into technologies for new mobility
  5. Become a mobility solutions provider
  6. Become a white label manufacturer

Each of these strategies holds its own unique implications, opportunities, challenges, and tactical possibilities for actors in the mobility sector. In order to successfully lead your company into the future, the archetypes must be aligned with the company’s starting position and brought into line with your vision. Our white paper is therefore intended primarily as a checklist and starting point for reviewing your future strategy.
