How does AI help people in medicine?

Fuád Abuschuscha

The NHS, the U.K.’s health care provider, recently partnered with two companies to conduct a large study, parts of which have already been published. In this study, an intelligent stethoscope was evaluated. 4 electrodes were mounted on the patients’ chest. Behind the scenes, an AI learned and was trained to detect heart failure during the studies. At the end of the study, the system was able to detect heart failure within 15 seconds, with 90 percent sensitivity. Thus, in 100 patients, 90 were correctly diagnosed with heart failure.

What does it mean?

This means, first of all, that cardiac insufficiencies can be detected much more reliably and at an earlier stage and that appropriate measures can be initiated more quickly.

The example is remarkable because a very large number of patients participated in the study and the AI system was run during normal diagnostic activities. This system was allowed to learn in the background until the required quality was achieved.
